Dobermann’s hepatitis is strengthening autoimmune disease

Dobermann’s Hepatitis Classification Based on Studies, Autoimmune Disease offers the opportunity to treat disease-causing dogs with immunologic anti-inflammatory drugs, says Hanna Dyggve, a professor at the University of Helsinki.

Dobermann’s hepatitis is an inflammatory liver disease especially in bitches, where liver cells are destroyed and replaced by connective tissue. Early diagnosis of the disease is difficult because it can be completely symptomatic for a long time. There is no healing treatment.

Dobermann’s hepatitis is known to be hereditary, but its inheritance mechanism is currently unknown. Hanna Dyggve has been able to locate genes that affect the disease in her dissertation.

– Dogs that were affected by the disease found a gene encoding a certain type of tissue structure more than 15 times more often than healthy dogs, both father and mother. Similarly, other tissue type genes protected the disease. The inherited risk for autoimmune diseases is strongly related to these gene areas, says Hanna Dyggve, a professor at the veterinary faculty.

In addition, there were indications that the immunological tolerance of Dobermann’s hepatitis dogs to their own tissue structures would be fractured. In dogs with Doberman hepatitis, antibodies were detected against their own tumor structures and enzymes.
