Drug Development and Diagnostics Strengthened with New Website and Five Assistant Professors

Drug development and diagnostics is a joint thematic research collaboration between the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. Now, the Universities are launching a new website, drugdevelopment.fi, which presents their expertise in drug development and diagnostics. In addition, the research field is strengthened with five new assistant professor recruitments.

The purpose of the website is to present the research and research groups in drug development and diagnostics in the Turku region. The site introduces world-class research groups, top of the range research services, excellent education possibilities, and IP ready for licensing.

– The recently launched website creates a new window into the expertise in drug development and diagnostics in Turku, and we hope that it will bring our research groups and partners in collaboration together more efficiently than before, says Vice-rector Niklas Sandler of Åbo Akademi University.

– In addition for increasing the visibility of the research conducted in the two Universities, the website includes information on drug development and technology transfer for the Universities’ researchers. We believe that in the future more and more researchers conducting basic research are also interested in utilising their results, says Scientific Director of BioCity Turku Jyrki Heino.

The thematic collaboration in drug development and diagnostics is based on strong research in medicine, molecular biosciences as well as in chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology. Examples of the research fields and areas are bioimaging, biobank activities, cancer research and diagnostics.

The Academy of Finland funds the research profile projects in drug development and diagnostics and bioimaging.

Research Field Strengthened with Five New Assistant Professors

The research collaboration in drug development and diagnostics is strengthened at the beginning of 2018 when five new assistant professors are recruited to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Turku.

– Drug development and diagnostics are national profiling fields of the University of Turku. There are over a hundred bioscience companies in the Turku region, the largest being Bayer Ltd with a tunover of over a billion Euro. The University of Turku wants to actively participate in the education and research in the field. The assistant professors will significantly strengthen the drug development and diagnostics expertise in the University and especially the medical research, says Dean Pentti Huovinen of the Faculty of Medicine.

The fields of the new Tenure Track positions are structural and functional neuroimaging and instrumentation, bioimage informatics and instrumentation, biomathematics in drug research, imaging instrumentation and detection technologies, and disease modelling and drug research. The application to the positions is open until 12 January.
